Contribuciones al uso de herramientas y procedimientos básicos para la caracterización de masas rocosas en la práctica de la geoingeniería de taludes

La inestabilidad de taludes en desarrollos urbanos y vías de comunicación, constituye una de las amenazas con mayor potencialidad de ocasionar significativas pérdidas económicas y lamentables pérdidas de vidas humanas. El diseño de estas geoestructuras, cuyo norte es el control de su vulnerabilidad y la consecuente disminución del riesgo, requiere ser realizado por profesionales con preparación académica de calidad y experticia en el ejercicio de la geoingeniería. El tema seleccionado se ha circunscrito al complejo proceso de diseño de taludes en masas rocosas, geomateriales de diversos orígenes y litologías tipificados por ser heterogéneos, discontinuos, inelásticos y anisotrópicos, características inherentes que condicionan su comportamiento, el cual indefectiblemente debe ser investigado y definido en cada caso particular. El alcance establecido contempla una detallada explicación de los fundamentos conceptuales y de las herramientas básicas disponibles para afrontar este esencial requerimiento técnico, con especial énfasis en la previa e indispensable investigación del marco geológico regional, y en la caracterización y clasificación geomecánica de dichas masas, fases primordiales del proceso de diseño. Se exponen los criterios, resultados de investigaciones y propuestas, obtenidos de la continua y exhaustiva revisión y el análisis crítico de una selección de referencias bibliográficas que sustentan el estado del conocimiento, información complementada por el autor con aportes teóricos y prácticos, fundamentados en la experticia adquirida durante el ejercicio profesional, y la actividad como docente de pregrado y postgrado. Los contenidos han sido organizados con la intención de que el trabajo sirva de material de apoyo a estudiantes universitarios, motive el ejercicio profesional con conocimiento de causa y espíritu crítico y contribuya al reconocimiento y manejo de las incertidumbres aleatoria y epistémica inherentes a la geoingeniería, particularmente aquellas presentes en las actividades de caracterización y clasificación de masas rocosas y en la elaboración de los modelos geológico-geotécnicos requeridos para los análisis de estabilidad de taludes. El trabajo destaca la importancia de los conceptos básicos, del uso apropiado de la terminología, y de las características del perfil profesional idóneo para la práctica de la geoingeniería, y detalla las incertidumbres implícitas en las diferentes fases de diseño. Incluye igualmente una evaluación pormenorizada de los principales factores que intervienen en la caracterización de masas rocosas, su identificación, y los procedimientos normativos y sugeridos para su determinación, y se presentan los resultados de una investigación realizada por el autor, orientada al estudio de la anisotropía de resistencia en rocas de la Cordillera de la Costa de Venezuela, utilizando herramientas sencillas y ensayos básicos. Se describen los diferentes mecanismos de rotura en masas rocosas, y se aborda la problemática de estabilidad de taludes en materiales constituidos por bloques de roca embebidos en una matriz de granulometría más fina, cuyo comportamiento mecánico es particularmente complejo. Se realiza una descripción de los principales sistemas de clasificación de masas rocosas aplicables a la ingeniería de taludes, destacando su utilidad, limitaciones, y posibles errores de interpretación. Como aportes del autor al tema seleccionado, se presentan dos sistemas desarrollados para clasificación de rocas sedimentarias y metamórficas, una versión actualizada de la clasificación para la definición de los tipos de excavación aplicables a diferentes geomateriales, y los resultados de una investigación detallada de campo y laboratorio en 32 taludes de corte en vías de comunicación y urbanismos, realizada para juzgar la aplicabilidad y confiabilidad de diferentes sistemas de clasificación en la predicción del comportamiento de dichos taludes ubicados en el contexto geológico de la Cordillera de la Costa de Venezuela. Se incluye una recopilación de un número significativo de correlaciones empíricas que permiten efectuar estimaciones de propiedades geomecánicas de masas rocosas, se destaca su utilidad y limitaciones, y se hace referencia a los criterios de rotura en masas rocosas y en discontinuidades. Se exponen consideraciones sobre recientes tecnologías para las actividades de caracterización y clasificación de masas rocosas, métodos de análisis y técnicas numéricas avanzadas en desarrollo, y se concluye con reflexiones acerca de la conveniencia de incorporar principios filosóficos en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje y en el ejercicio profesional de la ingeniería de rocas.
