Abstract

Caves, caverns, and grottos have played a fundamental role in the development of human civilization over thousands of years. Since their origins, they have provided shelter and protection from the elements, later evolving to be used as burial sites and spiritual rites. Caves have played an important role in many world religions as places of worship, meditation, connection to the underworld, spiritual transformation, and death/resurrection. Each religion has its own relationship with caves, but all recognize the power and importance of these natural spaces. One of the most widespread cultural uses, and one that has attracted the most visitors, is religious rites. Many caves in the world are used as places of religious worship or chapels, and as pilgrimage centers. Caves, in various parts of the world, are sites of great value in themselves, or for what they hold within, which is why they are considered an important part of a region's heritage. They function as a kind of time capsule, protecting and maintaining in excellent condition a crucial part of the natural (geological and paleontological) and human (archaeological) history of a given place. In recent decades, caves, caverns and grottos have also gained cultural significance. They have been used as spaces for art, music, and theater, as well as to showcase the wonderful underground world and all the forms that have developed within them over thousands, hundreds of thousands, and millions of years.
