Abstract

This article synthesizes the presentations and conclusions from the forum titled "Corrosion and Durability in Existing Buildings on the Venezuelan Coast," held in July 2025 by the Infrastructure Commission of the National Academy of Engineering and Habitat, in collaboration with the Latin American Association for Quality Control, Pathology, and Construction Recovery – Venezuela Chapter (ALCONPAT-Ve). The document analyzes the severe degradation issues affecting Venezuela's coastal infrastructure, an environment characterized by extreme corrosive aggressiveness (category CX according to ISO standards) due to the combination of high temperatures, relative humidity, and chloride transport via marine breeze. Through a review of Ibero-American research programs (MICAT and DURACON) and the analysis of specific case studies—such as galvanized steel power transmission towers in Lake Maracaibo and reinforced concrete structures in industrial plants—it is demonstrated that the lack of durability-oriented design criteria has led to premature failures, sometimes occurring only two years after construction. The text emphasizes that the traditional approach, focused solely on mechanical strength, is insufficient for the Venezuelan coastline. Finally, critical technical recommendations are proposed, including strict compliance with the NTF 4015:2012 standard, the use of low water-to-cement ratios, adequate concrete cover (5 to 7 cm), and the implementation of surface protection systems. It concludes that durability must be treated as an essential strategic investment for the sustainability and safety of buildings in the region.
